The Dr. J. Mark Erickson Geology University Fellows Endowment


The Dr. J. Mark Erickson Geology University Fellows Endowment was established in 2009 through the generosity of alumni, family, and friends to support the University Fellows program at St. Lawrence University in honor of Professor of Geology, Dr. J. Mark Erickson.  The friends of geology that gathered to establish this fund wish to acknowledge Dr. Erickson’s legacy of passionate teaching and dedication and commitment to students by endowing a University Fellowship in his name and honor.  The University fellow selected should embody the characteristics that make Dr. Erickson so special to this community—passion for learning both in and out of the classroom and loyalty to fellow students and associates. 

The Dr. J. Mark Erickson Geology University Fellows Endowment will be administered by the vice president of finance and treasurer or designates as a permanently restricted endowment fund at St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York.  The annual income from this permanently restricted endowment fund will be distributed according to University policy as established by the Board of Trustees, and awarded to students attending St. Lawrence University.

The Dr. J. Mark Erickson Geology University Fellows Endowment will be distributed by the vice president of the University and dean of academic affairs or designates. The fund will be granted in accordance with the institutional policies and procedures established for the University Fellows Program at St. Lawrence for the purposes of on-campus or off-campus research..

The Dr. J. Mark Erickson University Fellows Endowment will be awarded by the Scholarships, Fellowships and Grants Committee to students based on the following guidelines:
 

1.    Preference will be given to students in the following order: 

a.    First preference to a student that has declared geology as their major.
b.    Second preference to a student that has declared geology as their minor.
c.    Third preference to a student that has declared a multifield major with a component of their studies incorporating geology.

2.    If no student meets the above criteria, no award is to be granted and the and the income is to remain in the Dr. J. Mark Erickson Geology University Fellows Endowment Fund to be awarded in a future year.


In the unlikely event that, at some future time, it is not practical or possible for this fund to serve the specific purpose for which it was created, the President may authorize a change in the fund's purpose, as closely related as possible to the purposes stated herein.
